是不是命運之神特別眷顧這個有些愚笨的甘?如果我們仔細地思考，會發現事實並非如此。阿甘雖然不夠聰明，但他卻按照媽媽說的，“笨，是因爲有笨的作爲，但自己絕不能認爲自己笨。”他努力做好每一件事情。他從沒有刻意地去追求什麼，然而成功卻在他的毫無功利意識的努力中悄然而至。阿甘的成功，除了他的努力之外，和他與生俱來的一些品質也有極大關係。正如他的誠實贏得了丹中尉的友誼，他的守信和執着成就了他的捕蝦事業和愛情。

有一天，當他醒來時，發現珍妮已經離去，他開始了一次歷時3年2個月14天16小時的跑步。“我決定小跑一下，於是跑到路底，到底之時，我以爲到達鎮底了。我到了那裏時，我以爲橫越了綠弓郡，我想既然跑了這麼遠，就乾脆跑步穿過阿拉巴馬，沒特別的原因，我一直往前跑。我跑到了大海洋，到了那裏我想既然跑到這裏，索性再回頭往下跑。我到了另一個海洋，心想既然跑了這麼遠，乾脆回頭繼續地跑。”也許這句話能很好地解釋幸運之神會眷顧阿甘的原因。對於阿甘而言，人生就像是一次沒有特別原因的跑步，沒有既定的終點，只是不停地往前跑。正如阿甘在影片中所言，“要往前走就要忘記過去，我想這就是跑步的用意。”

與阿甘不同，珍妮和巴布都有既定的人生目標，有刻意的追求。所不同的是，一個出於成名的慾望，一個出於熱愛。他們的遭遇，我想，也許代表着兩種不同的命運呈現形式。

在影片中，巴布是個有趣的人物。他的理想就是做捕蝦船的船長。有關蝦子的事情，他無所不知。他成天掛在嘴上也總是蝦子。第一次見到阿甘，他就和他談論起蝦子。他說，他打算退伍之後做蝦子生意。巴布想做捕蝦船的船長，然而，他卻死在了越戰戰場上。也許，這就是命運，誰也無法預知。

影片中，羅伯斯試圖通過丹中尉這個角色，傳達另一種關於命運的觀點。丹認爲，“人的命運早已註定，沒有一件是巧合，都有安排。”人們不應該試圖去改變而且也無法改變自己的命運。丹出身軍人世家，祖上幾代都爲美利堅犧牲在戰場上。他認爲自己應該死在戰場上，這是一個軍人的榮譽，能從戰場上回來——而且是在失去雙腿後——完全就是自己的恥辱。由於這種觀點的支配，回到美國後，丹靠"喝國家的奶"度生，生活混亂不堪。後來，在阿甘的影響下，重新燃起對生活的信心，並在管理企業方面展現了他的天賦。
